No.41 Army Staff Car

Benbros Mighty Midget No.41 Army Staff Car

Mighty Midget No.41 Army Staff Car was the seventh military vehicle in the Series but it was not a new model. Instead, Benbros re-issued No.18 Hudson Tourer, painted it army-green and added a decal on the back.

The Staff Car body was a one-piece casting to which was attached a separate base to carry the wheels and provide the front and rear bumpers. There were two types of base, the first being a clip-fit to the body with open-ended bumpers, and the second being fixed by two rivets positioned just behind the axles and carrying strengthened bumpers. 'Benbros Qualitoy Made in England' was cast on both bases and overall the model measured 61mm in length.

The first No.41 Staff Car was painted matt army-green all over including the type 1 base, metal wheels and the nail-head & crimped axles. Silver trim was added to the grille, headlights and rear tail-lights, and a dark-blue & yellow square decal was put on the back on either the right or left side.

The type 1 base was soon replaced by type 2 with strengthened bumpers but the all-over colour of the model was the same with the dark-blue & yellow decal at the back. There might also have been a version with unpainted metal wheels and unpainted base but in many years of collecting this has never been confirmed.

Two other colours were given to the Army Staff Car, a glossy dark-green which was like a dark-olive colour, and bright green. Both had silver trim and a red & yellow rear decal. The dark-green models were painted all over including base and metal wheels, but the bright green ones had an unpainted base and were fitted with black plastic wheels on round-head & crimped axles.

One of the odd features of No.41 Army Staff Car was the Mighty Midget box which for some reason showed a picture of No.16b Station Wagon. Maybe Benbros had thought to use the Chevrolet model for the Staff Car and the boxes were printed before it was decided to use the Hudson instead.

No.41 Army Staff Car is not easy to find and the boxes are scarce.
