The second of the two British Railways Delivery Vans was a version with a Canvas Hood over the trailer.

Budgie used the same model of the Scammell Mechanical Horse cab and chassis as on No.238 but painted it in different colours. The cab section kept British Railways crimson and cream but a bright yellow colour was chosen for the chassis, base and front bumper. The metal rear wheels were in a matching yellow but the front wheel set into the base was always unpainted on this version.

In order to accomodate the canvas hood, a new casting was needed for the trailer. This version had similar horizontal planking effect on the sides but augmented by upright strips representing metal supports. The result was an accurate model of a drop-side body.

The green Canvas Hood or canopy was supported by two metal hoops which fitted into slots inside each corner. Because these hoops were only at each end of the canopy, the canvas was treated with some form of stiffener to keep it taught along the full length of the trailer. Like the the Hard-Top Delivery Van (No.238), the trailer and its metal wheels was painted crimson and the coupling system was a 'ring & socket' type making the trailer detachable.

Unlike the Hard-Top model, the Canvas Hood Delivery Van was not upgraded with the new British Railways bright yellow livery and was withdrawn from the catalogue in 1964.

No.240 Delivery Van shared a box with the Hard-Top version (No.238) with illustrations of both models, one on each side. To identify the model, No.240 had 'Canvas Hood' printed on each end-flap. The first boxes had no numbers (A1) but later 'No.240' was added to each picture face (A2). Both boxes are fairly scarce.

Budgie No.240 is not too hard to find although examples in mint condition with the original stiff canvas are scarce.
