Budgie Toys No.258

Daimler Ambulance

Issued 1961-63    Length 110mm

Having restored the Police Car (No.246) to their range, Budgie turned to the old Morestone Series Daimler Ambulance to expand the collection of Emergency vehicles. First issued in 1956, this was probably starting to seem a little out of date but it was a popular model and stayed in production until 1963.

As with the earlier model, the body was one casting with seperately cast rear doors which opened out from the centre. It was painted either white or cream and had raised crosses on each side picked out in red. Budgie improved the appearance by using 'Emergency' decals on the front roof sign and 'Ambulance' decals on each side, for which locating lines were introduced. Silver trim was added to the grille and headlights.

The base section included the large front and rear bumpers but also included the interior benches or beds, and also the driver at the front. The colour, which was painted inside and out, was changed to crimson-red and included the driver who lost his black uniform and face trim. Underneath, the lettering was altered to read 'Daimler Ambulance' and 'Budgie Toys' on a raised panel. 'Made in England' was recast at the rear.

As with the earlier model, there were no axles for the silver-painted metal wheels which fitted directly onto the base and which had large treaded rubber tyres.

The Daimler Ambulance had two types of box, the first with small numbers on the picture faces and the 'Morris & Stone' name (A2),  and the second with end-flap numbers and the 'Guiterman' name (A8).

Finding good examples of the Daimler Ambulance is not too difficult but the white version is hard to find.
