Budgie No.452

AA Motorcycle Patrol (Series 2)

Issued 1964-66    Length 82mm

In 1964 Budgie introduced the Series 2 Motorcycle Patrol model. It was based on a Triumph bike which the AA was then beginning to use. Painted black and with steering but on this version no identification, the bike had headlight trim in silver and separate yellow plastic leg-guards and a plastic screen. The rider was also the plastic version.

The Series 2 sidecar was a completely new, modern design with a full mudguard and an opening lid. Two 'AA' decals were added on the front although models with only one can be found. Underneath 'AA Patrol No.452' was cast inside with 'A Budgie Model' and 'Made in England' on the base. The sidecar was fixed to the bike through the rear axle and a front pin.

For the Series 2 model, Budgie seems to have started by using boxes from the Series 1 model but soon brought out a new box featuring an upgraded illustration and with larger model name and the correct '452' number on the end-flaps (B4). It was also sold in blue & white window packs (C1) which appeared to be too small for the model!

The Series 2 models are scarce and frequently have accessories missing. Mint and boxed models can get premium prices at auction.
