No.23 Cement Mixer

Budgie Miniatures No.23 Cement Mixer

Third of the models based on a Bedford TK cab and chassis was a cement lorry. No.23 Cement Mixer was first issued in 1963. It was probably a popular toy as it came in several colours and two types of mixer barrels.

The first issues had orange cabs and a cream-coloured mixer body. The cab and chassis castings followed the earlier Bedford models in having a narrow cross-brace behind the cab and rear holes for a hinge-pin (not needed on this model). The cab base had a short rear extension and asymetric lettering 'A Budgie Model' and 'Made in England'. For more details of this and the other Bedford chassis and base changes, see the Budgie No.21a Tipper Truck page and the variations listed below.

On the early models, the platform on which the cement mixer sat was secured only to the chassis which left a risk that the model could fall apart. In addition, the first-type barrel, which had a smooth interior, was possibly a little heavy for the mounting.

These problems were improved by Budgie creating a base with a longer rear extension so that the rivet could run through both chassis and base. At the same time, the chassis was strengthened with a stronger cross-brace, and the barrel was changed to a two-piece, thinner casting. This second type barrel can be identified by an internal ridge at the join.

Orange was the main colour used on the cab, chassis and base of No.23 Cement Mixer and appeared on all variations. Other colours used were dark green and red. The platform and cement barrel were always coloured cream.

The wheels on No.23, as with the other Bedford TK models, were black plastic, and usually on riveted axles but some first issue models had flat-head & crimped ones.

The Cement Mixer is not a scarce model but mint models are hard to find because the cream-coloured paint on the barrels was easily chipped. Production ended in 1966.
