Morestone 'Esso' Petrol Pump Series

No.5 Mobile Police Car

Morestone Esso Petrol Pump Series No.5 Police Car

No.5 Police Car was one of Morris & Stone's most successful models. It first appeared in the Esso Series, was later re-issued in 'Mobile' and 'Modern' boxes, in Toy House packs in the US, and as a Budgie model in both yellow and blue blister packs. The casting was also 're-cycled' as Budgie No.27 Fire Chief Car so it had a long life!

Like many models in the Esso Series, it was a simple two-piece casting of body and base. The loudspeakers or sirens on the roof were separately added but the front bumper with its bell was part of the base.

No.5 Police Car was based on a Wolseley 6/80 vehicle widely used by the British Police during the 1950's. They were always black so the Esso model was similarly glossy black. Silver trim was added to the grille and headlights, and to the rear bumper which was cast with the body.

The silver-painted base was interesting because it had a spelling mistake on the word Wolseley which was cast as 'Wolsley' (much in the way it was pronounced). The full writing said 'Police Car Wolsley Six-Eighty' and 'Made in England' with 'No.5' included at the rear.

The wheels were unpainted metal on flat-head & crimped axles.

In 1959 the Esso Petrol Pump Series was discontinued but No.5 Police Car continued to be sold in different versions including a green one with a re-cast and corrected base. These were Budgie models and full details can be found on the Budgie Miniatures No.5 Police Car page.

No.5 Mobile Police Car appeared in all three versions of the Esso Petrol Pump boxes and with both Garage and Tanker Coupons. It is widely available and mint examples are easy to find.
