Dublo Dinky Toys
071 Volkswagen Delivery Van

Issued 1960-1964 1:76 scale OO/HO gauge
The Volkswagen Delivery Van was an interesting choice for the Dublo range as they were becoming quite popular in the late 1950's. They had a large load area and were ecomonical because of their air-cooled rear engines.
Dinky constructed the VW model in the usual body and base configuration and included windows. Always coloured bright yellow, the body was painted inside and out and 'Hornby Dublo' was added to each side. Silver trim was applied to the 'VW' logo on the front, to the headlights and to both front & rear bumpers.
The black tinplate base was the conventional Dublo type with external flanges for the axles. It was held in place by a tab at the front representing a number plate and by a rivet just in front of the rear axle. 'Dublo Dinky Toys Volkswagen Meccano Ltd Made in England' was added to the base.
Two kinds of wheel were used on the VW Van, grey treaded plastic and later black treaded plastic.
Only one type of box was used for the VW which was the standard red and yellow one without pictures. The model name was printed on both end-flaps.
It seems that the application of the 'Hornby Dublo' signs on each side of the VW was difficult to get right during manufacture as these are frequently poorly finished. In addition, the variation with black wheels is harder to find so the VW is interesting to collect.
