Morestone 'Esso' Petrol Pump Series
No.18 Foden Dumper Lorry
The Foden Dumper, No.18 in the Esso Petrol Pump Series, was unusual in not having a base but instead being a cab & chassis construction. It was based on a very large vehicle so the model was the smallest scale in the Series.
Cast in one unit, the half-cab and chassis had an open centre but it was a slightly fragile design and when Budgie re-issued it they added strengtheners. It was painted bright red with generous silver trim on the front grille and bumper.
The yellow dumper was an excellent piece of casting with plenty of realistic detail. It fitted onto the chassis at the rear which enabled it to tip. Underneath (behind the cab) the words 'Made in England No.18' were cast and this was the only identification on the model.
One interesting feature of No.18 Foden Dumper was the two sizes of wheel used. Both were unique to this model. They were unpainted metal on flat-head & crimped axles.
When re-issued after the Esso Series was discontinued, the Foden Dumper had a colour change but the Esso variation was always red & yellow with metal wheels. For more details of other variations see the Budgie Miniatures No.18 Foden Dumper page.
Being issued after the Garage Offer closed, the Foden Dumper had just one type of Esso box with a large number in a circle on the base flap. A Tanker Coupon was included inside.
Despite the good casting, the yellow dumper paint was prone to chipping so mint examples of No.18 Foden Dumper are now quite hard to find.
