Dublo Dinky Toys
064 Austin Lorry

Issued 1957-1962 1:76 scale OO/HO-gauge
The Dublo range was devised to compliment OO/HO-gauge railway layouts so the first model in the collection (although the fourth in the numbering system) was a lorry based on the Austin Loadstar, a versatile commercial vehicle common in the 1950's. Dinky created a sturdy model which must have been popular because it was re-issued with three types of wheel and two types of box.
Cast as one piece without a base, the Dublo Austin Lorry had an excellent amount of surface detail for a small toy. It was always painted green, both inside and out, with silver trim on the grille, headlights and bumper, and this did not change throughout its life. Underneath the loadbed 'Dublo Dinky Toys Austin Meccano Ltd' was cast and 'Made in England' was added inside the roof of the cab.
Like all the early Dublo models, the Austin Lorry first appeared with smooth grey plastic wheels on axles passing through extensions to the body casting. Later, when Dinky introduced treaded wheels, the Austin was fitted with these, and finally at the end of its life black plastic wheels were used.
The first box for the Austin Lorry was the generic yellow end-flap type with the usual red bands at each end and pictures of the model (with smooth grey wheels) on each face. The second box had no illustrations but instead two red sides with 'Dublo Dinky Toys' in yellow with the model name beneath.
Examples of the Austin Lorry are not hard to find but the black wheeled variation is quite scarce.
