Dublo Dinky 073 Land Rover & Horse Trailer

Issued 1960-1966  1:76 scale   OO/HO gauge

The most interesting model to collect in the Dublo range is the Land Rover and Horse Trailer set. Not only was it well-cast with good play value, it had several variations and all three types of wheel. It was based on the Series 2 Land Rover with a cab which came into use in 1958 and was the workhorse for many farms and stables.

Like all the Dublo models, the Land Rover was cast in a single mould with a black tinplate base which included the rear tow-hook. Windows were added to the cab and silver trim put on the front grille, headlights and bumper, and touches of red added to the rear taillights. A spare wheel was fixed onto the bonnet which did not always match the road wheels. Underneath, 'Dublo Dinky Toys Land Rover Meccano Ltd Made in England' was added to the base plate which also had flanges for the two axles.

Like most real Land Rovers at the time, the model was painted green but the Horse Trailer was coloured bright orange inside and out. It was a detailed model with a plastic ramp at the rear and a black tinplate base with a tab at the back and a rivet at the front. On the base 'Meccano England Dublo Dinky Toys Smiths Horse Trailer' was written. Inside there was a plastic horse.

Dinky made some changes to the colour of the trailer ramp which was either bright green or black. There were also colour variations to the horse which could be pale fawn, tan or brown.

Both the Land Rover and the Trailer had all three types of Dublo wheel, smooth grey, treaded grey and treaded black plastic. With the grey wheels, it seems that Dinky sometimes issued the sets with different types of wheel on the Land Rover and on the Trailer.

There were two boxes for the Land Rover set although they were very similar. Both were yellow with red bands at each end and a picture of the model on opposite sides. The only difference was in the wheels on the models which, on the first boxes, depicted grey treaded wheels and on the second boxes showed black wheels.

The Land Rover & Horse Trailer was a popular toy and so when Meccano ceased trading in 1964, production continued under the new owners, Tri-ang, but it was eventually withdrawn in 1966.

With several variations and combinations to collect, the Land Rover & Horse Trailer is an interesting model and when in excellent boxed condition can fetch a premium at sales.
